BEREA(AP) — Colt McCoy wears No. 12. For the Cleveland Browns, he’s also No.

BEREA(AP) — Colt McCoy wears No. 12. For the Cleveland Browns, he’s also No. 10.

It’s a number they’d like to stay stuck on.

On Sunday against Cincinnati, McCoy will become the 10th different quarterback to start a season opener for the Browns since 1999, an astonishing statistic and perhaps the single biggest reason the franchise has failed miserably during an expansion era of losses. McCoy follows Ty Detmer, Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn and Jake Delhomme as quarterbacks to begin the year as Cleveland’s starter.

“I hope it stays like this for a while,” McCoy said Wednesday.

In the NFL, quarterback consistency is vital to success. With a revolving door at the game’s most important position, it’s no wonder the Browns have only made the playoffs once and lost at least 10 games nine times in 12 years. Cleveland has been searching for a leader to guide them from the dismal darkness and back to respectability.

McCoy, who showed grit and toughness in eight starts in 2010, just might be the one.

And this season, anyway, he’ll get the chance to succeed or fail.

McCoy’s rise from third-round draft pick to starter happened quickly.

Rewind to last season’s opener. The former Texas star was a raw, out-of-sight, out-of-mind rookie running Cleveland’s scout team in practice. While Delhomme and backup Seneca Wallace took all the snaps, McCoy stood to the side waiting and wondering if his time would ever come.

Buried on the depth chart, McCoy was inactive when the Browns traveled to Tampa Bay in Week 1. But things changed in a hurry. Delhomme severely sprained his ankle against the Buccaneers, Wallace went down with same injury in Week 5, and suddenly McCoy was thrust into a starting role few believed he was ready to handle.

“He was kind of thrown into the fire,” Browns first-year coach Pat Shurmur said.

His personal inferno began in Pittsburgh, where McCoy made his first career start against the Steelers and in front of their Terrible Towel-waving fans. The night before the game, McCoy stood up at a meeting and told his teammates not to worry, he was ready to handle the job.

Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown feared for McCoy.

“I thought, this poor kid,” Brown said. “I hope he’s praying.”

But McCoy proved he belonged, completing 23 of 33 passes for 281 yards despite being sacked five times and pressured numerous others. It was there, at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers that many of Cleveland’s players became convinced they had found their leader.

“He wasn’t scared,” Brown said. “That’s one of the toughest defenses in the National Football League and he went in there and he held his own.”

Then we put him in there against New Orleans, New England. Go back to some of the games he played and you look at his aura on the field and his demeanor, you just know that if you surround him with the players that can make plays for him — he’s not going to turn the ball over, he’s going to make the correct reads and the better part is, if he makes those mistakes, he’ll work his tail off to fix it.

“That’s when you know you have a guy.”

Shurmur thinks so, too.

Cleveland’s fifth coach since ’99, Shurmur has been impressed with everything about McCoy. During the labor lockout, it was McCoy who organized practices in Austin, Texas. At those workouts, dubbed “Camp Colts” by his teammates, McCoy and the Browns took their first initial steps in learning Shurmur’s West Coast offense, a passer friendly system the team feels perfectly suits McCoy’s accurate — if not strong — right arm.

McCoy also took it upon himself to visit Brett Favre, hoping a few days in Mississippi picking the brain of the former league MVP would help him better understand the new offense. McCoy came to camp prepared and then played extremely well in Cleveland’s three exhibition games.

“He basically did what we wanted and now the next step is to do it for 60 minutes in a regular-season game,” Shurmur said. “He has been passing the tests as we’ve gone along, and Sunday will be the next test.”

McCoy has done his homework.

“Now is where it counts,” he said.

Composed whether he’s calling a play in the huddle, facing a blitz or surrounded by cameras at his locker, McCoy insists he’s not feeling any added pressure as he embarks on his second season as a pro. A coach’s son, this is what he’s been groomed to do since he was a kid.

Now is when the fun starts.

“I’ve come a long ways,” McCoy said. “But I’ve still got plenty of work to do, no question. This team is ready to start, ready for the regular season. This is where it starts counting. For us, we’ve put in a lot of hours, a lot of time. We’ve worked hard together, now I think we kind of know some of the things we’re good at, some of the things we’re not as good at. Those things we’ll keep working on. But I think we’re ready to put a plan together and go see what happens.”

Notes: The Browns have some offensive line issues to resolve in the next few days. Starting right tackle Tony Pashos didn’t practice and still has a walking boot on his left foot. Also, Shurmur hasn’t decided whether he’ll start rookie Jason Pinkston at left guard. … TE Ben Watson, LB Chris Gocong and S Usama Young returned to practice on a limited basis. … WR Greg Little was chosen winner of the Maurice Bassett Award, given annually by the media to the top first-year player in training camp. … On Sunday, McCoy will square off with Bengals rookie QB Andy Dalton. They played each other in college when McCoy was at Texas and Dalton at TCU. McCoy only remembered a few details of their previous meeting. “They came to us,” McCoy said, “and we beat ’em pretty bad.”

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Colt McCoy wears No.

It was there, at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers that many of Cleveland’s players became convinced they had found their leader — at last.

“He wasn’t scared,” Brown said. “That’s one of the toughest defenses in the National Football League and he went in there and he held his own.

“They came to us,” McCoy said, “and we beat ‘em pretty bad.”

That’s all for today.

BEREA — Quarterback Jake Delhomme has been unceremoniously released by the Cleveland Browns.

A one-sentence statement by the team on Thursday announcing the expected move was quite a contrast to how Delhomme came to town a year ago.

Then, the Browns welcomed Delhomme with open arms and an open bank book, giving him a two-year contract. They hoped he could help Cleveland construct its first winning season since 2007. Instead, a severely sprained right ankle in the season opener limited him to five games. He lost his starting job to rookie Colt McCoy.

Delhomme became McCoy’s mentor, tutoring him in an unofficial player-coach capacity. He almost created the role, often driving the precocious passer from Texas to practice, trying to impart wisdom gained as a former Super Bowl and Pro Bowl quarterback.

McCoy’s rapid development and the signing this spring of backup Seneca Wallace to a three-year deal signaled that the Browns would save paying Delhomme’s base salary of $5.4 million in 2011.

Delhomme went 2-2 as Cleveland’s starter, completing 93 of 149 passes for 872 yards and two touchdowns with seven interceptions. In seven years with Carolina, he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2004 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2005. The Panthers released him after a 2009 season in which he tossed 18 interceptions and only eight touchdown passes.

The 36-year-old from Louisiana could return home to play for the New Orleans Saints, who showed interest in him a year ago as a backup to Drew Brees.

The Browns are more focused at the moment on signing draft picks than spending on free agents. They are expected to announce the signings of second-round picks Jabaal Sheard and Greg Little. Sheard, a defensive end from Pittsburgh, is nearing a $2.2 million bonus and a $5.09 million deal, while Little, a wide receiver from North Carolina, will get $3.32 million with a $920,000 bonus.

It is all part of the Browns’ change of course under new coach Pat Shurmur, who replaced the fired Eric Mangini after Cleveland went 5-11. Shurmur, the sixth coach since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999, is installing a West Coast offense and changing the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 set.

Delhomme was not invited back for the changeover, though tight end Evan Moore said he is eager to jump back on board.

“Yes, I plan on doing so,” Moore said when asked if he will be re-signing with the Browns when NFL teams are allowed to announce free-agent signings Friday at 6 p.m.

Moore emphasized that the new agreement had taken away the word “unrestricted” in front of free agent in his case, but that he never wanted to leave Cleveland anyway.

“My comfort level here with the direction of the team since coach (team president Mike) Holmgren and (general manager) Tom Heckert came aboard is great. There was no place I wanted to be but here. It was a no-brainer,” he said. “This is a great place with great fans.”

Kicker Phil Dawson, who had announced retirement plans at the end of last season, is expected to report Friday. The Browns designated him as a their franchise player in February.

“I had a very good conversation with Phil,” Heckert had said Wednesday. “And we’ll see what happens.”

Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who missed all of last season with a torn pectoral muscle, said he is healthy and excited to play in a revamped defensive alignment.

“The 4-3 is a blessing to me,” Jackson said.

“There’s less battles with those 330-pound linemen. I like seeing four big guys in front of me. I’ll have a little less movement, but a lot more fun.”

Cleveland also is expected to add safety Usama Young, whose agent tweeted he had a done deal with the Browns. Young played four years for the New Orleans Saints. Both he and Browns free agent Abram Elam played at nearby Kent State.

Elam tweeted that he hopes to sign: “Been contacted by a few teams; just patiently waiting,” texted Elam, who played in all 16 games a year ago.

The Browns also announced they had terminated the contract of linebacker Eric Alexander and waived tight end Tyson DeVree.

What do you guys think about this.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns joined the frenzied pace of player transactions Thursday when they reached agreements with several players, including two rookie draft choices and their first unrestricted free agents.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns joined the frenzied pace of player transactions Thursday when they reached agreements with several players, including two rookie draft choices and their first unrestricted free agents.

They also were expecting to formally sign franchise kicker Phil Dawson and restricted free-agent tight end Evan Moore today, so they will report to the opening of coach Pat Shurmur’s first Browns training camp.

Agreeing to contracts were defensive end Jabaal Sheard and wide receiver Greg Little, who were second-round picks. The Browns also reached free-agent deals with players from the past two Super Bowl champions — free safety Usama Young of New Orleans and running back Brandon Jackson of Green Bay.

The Browns also confirmed the release of quarterback Jake Delhomme, along with linebacker Eric Alexander and tight end Tyson DeVree.

Here’s the breakdown on the transactions:

• Young, of Kent State, was the first unrestricted free agent to come to terms with the Browns. They targeted him when teams were allowed to begin negotiations Tuesday and actually reached agreement with him that day. The Browns view Young as the new free safety, replacing two-year starter Abe Elam, who probably will leave in free agency.

Young, 26, was drafted as a cornerback in the third round by New Orleans in 2007. He was first or second in special teams tackles his first two seasons as a reserve defensive back. He started two games at cornerback.

The Saints moved Young to free safety his next two years, where he continued as a top reserve and special teams core player. Young, 6-0 and 200 pounds, played in 52 games, starting six, and was very much a part of the Saints team that rose from the depths of Hurricane Katrina and won Super Bowl XLIV against Indianapolis following the 2009 season.

On his Twitter account, Young bade farewell to Saints fans with the message: “NOLA, Thanks 4 giving me memories of a lifetime. On the field, and even more, the community. I’ll forever love the city.”

• Jackson, 25, fits the role of third-down back desired by Shurmur in his West Coast offense. He’s adept as a pass catcher and also developed as a dependable blitz pickup specialist.

Jackson, 5-10 and 216 pounds, caught 43 passes with the Packers last year and 110 in four seasons in Green Bay. In the Packers’ run to the Super Bowl title last year, injuries thrust him into a starting role for 13 games. He had a career-high 703 yards rushing on 190 attempts.

• Sheard, the 37th overall pick of the draft, signed for $5.09 million over four years with a signing bonus of $2.25 million, according to reports. Little, 59th overall, received $3.32 million over four years with a bonus of $920,000.

When drafted, each was being counted on to make immediate impacts in their rookie seasons. Sheard could be rushed in as the starting right end in coordinator Dick Jauron’s new, 4-3 alignment. Little is the lone new player at wide receiver, a position viewed by outsiders as a weakness, though the club disputes that.

• Dawson, the only full-time kicker the Browns have known in their expansion era, agreed to sign the team’s franchise tender for about $3.25 million, a league source confirmed.

Dawson reportedly was looking forward to free agency and perhaps joining a contending team and was not pleased with being franchised by the Browns. But General Manager Tom Heckert said he had a “very good conversation” with Dawson on Wednesday and said he expected him to report to camp and sign the deal.

• Moore will sign the team’s second-round tender, which is for just under $2 million, he said Thursday.

“Ever since Coach [Mike] Holmgren got here along with Tom Heckert, I just feel this place is going in the right direction,” Moore said. “There’s no place I want to be but here. Great fans, great people. It was a no-brainer for me. I feel my role for this organization is on a good trajectory.”

The Browns expect more players to agree to terms by the end of today’s first day of training camp. First-round pick Phil Taylor has been in town for a couple days, though no deal was apparent on Thursday. Draft picks Owen Marecic, Jordan Cameron, Jason Pinkston, Buster Skrine and Eric Hagg were close to agreeing to terms, according to sources.

The Browns released three players Thursday.

The Browns terminated the contracts of linebacker Eric Alexander and quarterback Jake Delhomme. In addition, the team waived tight end Tyson DeVree.

Delhomme signed a two year deal with the Browns before last season worth about $14 million.

The Browns will not confirm the move with 19 Action News, saying league rules prohibit any roster moves until Thursday at 4:01 p.m. The move would open up about $2.3 million in salary cap room for the Browns.

Delhomme passed for 872 yards, with two touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.

He started the first game last season against Tampa Bay, but sprained his ankle in the first half. He completed the game, but missed the next three games.

Delhomme only played in three more games for the rest of the season.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Welcome to today’s edition of Starting Blocks TV, hosted by Chuck Yarborough and Branson Wright.

With the NFL lockout over, it’s time to ask a question that was touched on by Bill Livingston and Terry Pluto in their columns today: Did the lockout’s resolution help the Browns or work against them? That’s the topic of today’s Starting Blocks poll.

Today’s guest is Plain Dealer Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot, who says she thinks the early resolution was a bonus, and that the Browns could have been worse off if training camp days had been lost.

Mary Kay also discusses whether Jake Delhomme will be back; how the Browns will attack free agency and spend the millions of dollars to get them up to the new salary-cap floor; and predicts which players the Browns will keep or cut as Chuck and Branson play a game called “Keep or Cut?”

SBTV will return Wednesday with Plain Dealer Ohio State reporter Doug Lesmerises talking Buckeye football.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As we were saying before being rudely interrupted by the NFL labor dispute, yes, the Browns have a lot of work to do on their roster.

General Manager Tom Heckert has to: 1. re-sign the team’s free agents he wants to keep, 2. sign at least a dozen undrafted free agents, 3. execute some trades, 4. sign the team’s eight rookie draft picks, and 5. sign some starting-caliber veteran free agents.

At various times during the four-month-old lockout, the Browns have said they won’t be “crazy” in free agency, but they swear they will act aggressively.

On Saturday, Browns President Mike Holmgren said, “The one thing we’ve been able to do prior to the lockout and during the lockout . . . Tom Heckert and personnel people . . . we’ve been in endless meetings, so that when they actually lift the curtain, we’ll hit the ground running.”

The NFL released the official lists of unrestricted and restricted free agents on Monday. The Browns have 15 unrestricted free agents on their roster. They also declined to make qualifying offers to third-year players Blake Costanzo and Titus Adams.

Key dates in getting back to football

Tuesday: All clubs open facilities to players under contract for physicals and voluntary strength and conditioning; trading begins for all teams; rosters expanded to 90 players; Browns may begin negotiating with and signing draft picks and undrafted rookies; Browns may begin negotiating with — but not sign — their own free agents and league free agents.

Friday: Browns open training camp; at 6 p.m., Browns and other clubs may start signing free agents. Players who sign report to their clubs, but may not participate in on-field activities until Aug. 4.

Aug. 4: Official 2011 league year begins; all players under contract can practice; all clubs must be within the salary cap with their top 51 paid players.

Aug. 13: Browns’ first preseason game against Green Bay Packers at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

— Tony Grossi

The first three tasks take on more immediate priority. To sort things out, here’s a recap of where the Browns’ roster stands and what needs to be done.

Quarterbacks

Projected starter: Colt McCoy.

Others under contract: Seneca Wallace, Jake Delhomme, Jarrett Brown.

To do: Delhomme’s scheduled $5.4 million 2011 salary might make it hard to trade him unless he agrees to rework his contract. Ideally, a young, developmental quarterback would be found to fill the No. 3 role.

Running backs

Projected starters: Peyton Hillis, Montario Hardesty.

Others under contract: Tyler Clutts, Quinn Porter.

Unsigned: Owen Marecic (r), Mike Bell, Lawrence Vickers.

To do: Any back has to be an accomplished pass catcher. They could seek a third-down back who specializes in the passing game.

Wide receivers

Projected starters: Josh Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie.

Others under contract: Johnathan Haggerty, Carlton Mitchell, Jordan Norwood, Demetrius Williams, Rod Windsor.

Unsigned: Greg Little (r), Chansi Stuckey.

To do: If they add one in free agency, he should be a true No. 1 and not a player just to join the mix. Examine whether Cribbs should play in the slot or in the backfield.

Tight ends

Projected starter: Ben Watson.

Others under contract: Tyson DeVree.

Unsigned: Jordan Cameron (r), Evan Moore, Alex Smith, Greg Estandia.

To do: Moore is a restricted free agent and must be re-signed.

Offensive line

Projected starters: Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Alex Mack, Shawn Lauvao, Tony Pashos.

Others under contract: Branndon Braxton, Pat Murray, Phil Trautwein, Steve Vallos.

Unsigned: Jason Pinkston (r), Floyd Womack, Billy Yates.

To do: If Pashos reports to camp fully recovered from his season-ending ankle injury, don’t expect a starting-caliber new player to be added. Re-signing Womack and/or Yates seems prudent, since both can swing to two positions.

Defensive line

Projected starter: Ahtyba Rubin.

Others under contract: Travis Ivey, Scott Paxson, Ko Quaye, Brian Sanford, Brian Schaefering.

Unsigned: Titus Adams, Jayme Mitchell, Derreck Robinson, Jabaal Sheard (r), Robaire Smith, Phil Taylor (r).

To do: Much. They want to re-sign Mitchell to man the left end spot. When signed, Taylor (left tackle) and Sheard (right end) have to be force-fed immediately. There are more bodies under contract at the tackle position, so at least two ends have to be signed.

Linebackers

Projected starters: Scott Fujita, D’Qwell Jackson, Chris Gocong.

Others under contract: Eric Alexander, Marcus Benard, Titus Brown, Auston English, Kaluka Maiava, Steve Octavien.

Unsigned: Blake Costanzo, Matt Roth, Jason Trusnik.

To do: Jackson’s torn pectoral muscles are said to be back to normal, but team has to protect itself with a middle linebacker to compete as a starter. Benard’s role has to be defined early. Is he a full-time linebacker, a full-time end or just a situational rusher?

Cornerbacks

Projected starters: Sheldon Brown, Joe Haden.

Others under contract: Coye Francies, Ramzee Robinson.

Unsigned: Buster Skrine (r), Eric Wright.

To do: Wright must be re-signed and another veteran acquired. If Wright leaves in free agency, they have to sign two cornerbacks.

Safeties

Projected starter: T.J. Ward.

Others under contract: Mike Adams, Sabby Piscitelli, DeAngelo Smith.

Unsigned: Abram Elam, Eric Hagg (r), Nick Sorensen, Ray Ventrone.

To do: Sign a starting free safety, enabling Adams to swing to corner or safety in sub packages.

Specialists

Projected starters: Reggie Hodges, Ryan Pontbriand.

Unsigned: Phil Dawson.

To do: Mend differences with Dawson on a new contract. He never signed his franchise tender and had mentally and emotionally counted on leaving in free agency.

With only eight NFL starts on his resume, Browns quarterback Colt McCoy knows his decision to write a book so early in his career has raised some eyebrows.

McCoy, though, stands by the intent of the book, Growing Up Colt, which has recently been released. The book, co-authored by McCoy, his father, Brad, and writer Mike Yorkey, is primarily about life lessons learned through the guidance of parenting and faith.

“We were skeptical at first,” McCoy said Tuesday in a phone interview. “When we were approached to write a book, I was just thinking, ‘Why? It’s not like I’ve won a Super Bowl or done anything real extraordinary that’s really book worthy.’

“But they approached us more along the lines of writing this book in a way to kind of talk about some of the experiences I’ve had, the ups and downs, the things that I’ve faced in my life growing up, along with some of the lessons and the principles that my mom [Debra] and dad tried to use in raising me.”

The first chapter, Rookie Start in Blitzburgh, will perhaps capture the attention of Browns fans more than any other part. It describes the disappointment McCoy felt last season in Week 5, when he didn’t get a chance to replace Seneca Wallace once the latter suffered a high ankle sprain late in the first half against the Atlanta Falcons. Jake Delhomme, who was still recovering from a high ankle sprain of his own, was called upon to substitute for Wallace.

McCoy, 24, wrote that former Browns coach Eric Mangini “was doing everything he could to not give me the ball.” After the Browns lost to the Falcons, McCoy initially believed the team would rather sign a quarterback to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6 than let him make his regular-season debut.

“Since the Cleveland coaches had treated me like a leper since the season began, I figured they were busy making phone calls to bring in a veteran free agent,” McCoy wrote.

Of course, despite worrying that he wouldn’t receive his big break, McCoy ended up starting when the Browns visited the Steelers at Heinz Field.

“Yeah, it was a little tough, expectedly,” McCoy said. “I think it’s no secret. We all knew for a third-string quarterback in the NFL, that’s kind of how it is, and that’s kind of how it starts for a lot of guys. [Before the season began, Browns President Mike] Holmgren was great and just said, ‘Look, it’s not in our plans for you to play. Here’s what we want you to do. We drafted you. We expect things out of you. But right now, we expect you to just sit there and watch.’

“I don’t want some of those things in the beginning of the book to come across as I’m bashing anybody. I’m just telling you some of my emotions, some of how I felt, some of the ways our coaches coached. … For me, it was one of those down times, where you have to learn from, grow from and take something positive and really learn from it. I hope that’s what I did.”

McCoy said he doesn’t want anyone to think he wrote the book for attention, either. The purpose of the book, he said, is to inspire readers.

“I guess the one main thing that I’ve been really hesitant about this whole time, really hesitant about even writing the book, was I don’t want people to get the sense when they read this book, [that I’m] like, ‘I’ve done all these great things. Look at me. Here I am,’ ” McCoy said. “You know, that type of book. I really wanted to put some things in there to make me sound normal, like a human being. Yeah, I’ve struggled. Yeah, I’ve had to overcome a lot of things to get where I am.

“I guess the main message would be, ‘Hey, I’m not perfect in any way.’ Here’s some things that I went through, some experiences that I learned [from] growing up. Hopefully, you can learn from some of these, and it will help you in your life if you’re an athlete trying to make it, if you’re a father trying to raise your kids, a mother trying to raise your kids.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Just received my copy of “Growing Up Colt — A Father, a Son, a Life in Football.” It’s the book co-written by Browns quarterback Colt McCoy and his father, Brad.

The book is mostly a memoir of Colt’s early development, of lessons taught, told in his voice and that of his father.

There are some revealing glimpses into McCoy’s first season in Cleveland. Such as:

• As the season began, McCoy found it difficult to cope with a role he termed as “the forgotten man on the roster.”

• McCoy was despondent when he was passed over to relieve Seneca Wallace in Game 4 against Atlanta. Wallace suffered a high ankle sprain just before the first half ended. Jake Delhomme, who suffered a high ankle sprain in Game 1, was rushed in to relieve Wallace instead.

Everyone knew Jake’s ankle wasn’t ready, but Coach Mangini sent him back on the field to play anyway. That sent a signal loud and clear that Coach was doing everything he could to not give me the ball.

• The next day, after Delhomme reinjured his ankle by hobbling through the second half against Atlanta, McCoy was told he would start the next game in Pittsburgh.

Ever since I reported to training camp, I had gotten the message loud and clear: Colt, you’re not going to play this year. Your job is to watch and listen. When I walked into the Browns’ headquarters that morning, however, I was greeted like a long-lost family member who had unexpectedly shown up at a McCoy summer reunion.

I marched into Coach Mangini’s office, and he warmly greeted me and offered me a chair. ‘Colt, we need to get you ready for this weekend against Pittsburgh. You’re starting.’

• On the eve of his first start in Pittsburgh, McCoy stood and addressed his teammates to relieve their fears about playing the Steelers with a raw rookie at quarterback.

I know you have no idea what it’s going to be like tomorrow. Everyone in here is scared stiff about a rookie going into Pittsburgh and having his first start. If you want to be scared, be scared. I’m not scared. I’m ready to play. I’m excited. I’m fired up. This is my passion. This is what I love to do. And I can’t wait to get out there and play with all you guys tomorrow.

Our game tomorrow is going to be the start of something great. Bring your all because I know I’m bringing all mine. The hay is in the barn. Let’s go.

• McCoy’s dad and mom, Debra, attended the game in Heinz Field with McCoy’s eventual wife, Rachel. A few Steelers fans taunted them after they were identified.

“[Troy] Polamalu is going to kill your son. I wouldn’t watch if I was you,” Brad McCoy says one person called. “You better hope Colt’s life insurance is paid up today,” he says another taunted.

• After McCoy acquitted himself well against the fired-up Pittsburgh defense, Steelers fans were more respectful.

One said to the family, “No rookie has ever come in here and done this,” Brad McCoy writes.

Another said, “Your son is unbelievable!”

• McCoy was encouraged by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after the game, won by Pittsburgh, 28-10.

McCoy writes that Roethlisberger said, “Great job. I thought you played well today. Keep your head up. You’re going to be a great player.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.
