Boardman native John Greco is in his second season with the Cleveland Browns.

On the heels of signing a two-year extension with the team, the offensive lineman said he’s happy to be playing closer to home.

“I just like the opportunity to come back and play with the little kids and you know, have fun playing the sport that I do for a living,” Greco said Thursday during a youth football clinic in Boardman.

One hundred kids ages 5-14 took part in the Cleveland Browns football clinic at Boardman High School. They’re all members of the Youngstown Youth Flag Football Association, so what they learned will really help them with their skills and drills.

“The main focus of flag football is to teach kids fundamentals, to be able to get better at the game of football as they prepare themselves for tackle football. There’s no better venue than a clinic like this that actually reinforces those,” said YYFFA president Elliott Giles.

The kids went through stations, where Browns coaches worked with them on things like catching, running and tackling.

“It’s my favorite sport and I can’t believe I’m a girl and I’m doing it,” said 9-year-old Bella Lamparty.

“It helps people be better at football. It just makes you look better than everybody else. I try to be good and I work my hardest at it,” said 10-year-old Nathan Cuttica.

Representatives for the Cleveland Browns said programs like this get kids engaged early on, keeping them active.

“Football is a game that starts at the grassroots level and when you see kids out here 5, 6 years old, learning how to play the game, appreciate the game, that’s our goal from a youth football programming perspective,” said Matt Yunker, youth football manager for the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns organization also will be in town Friday for a sold out luncheon at the Maronite Center, where Greco will speak, along with head coach Pat Shurmur.

What do you guys think about this.

Even though Colt McCoy did not have a solid offensive line, or many weapons at wide receiver, Bleacher Report reporter Aidan Reynolds writes how the Browns quarterback couldn’t make necessary NFL throws last season.

Reynolds continues to pile on McCoy. He writes how McCoy’s play was predictable in his inability to spread the defense with a deep ball and the opposition knew this, throwing blitz after blitz at him as he attempted to hit another curl or slant route.

The lack of an offseason or elite receiving threat can soak up a portion of the blame, sure, but the reluctance to name McCoy the 2012 starter ahead of the draft indicated that there was change afoot in Northeast Ohio.

Since the Browns no longer had any faith in McCoy, Brandon Weeden was the right choice, Reynolds writes. And because of (another) change, the Browns should be granted patience as the team moves forward, writes Reynolds.

How long is the next question.

More Cleveland Browns

Should the Cleveland Browns go after the Detroit Lions’ Tony Scheffler (sports.gather.com)?

NFL players knew what they were getting into (The News-Herald).

Otto Graham is the second-greatest QB of all-time (CBSSports).

Tony Peters, former Browns defensive back, becomes a high school coach (Tulsa World).

Phil Taylor will still have an impact once he returns (Cleveland.com).

The Browns have the largest rookie pool (ESPN).

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is determined to stave off the challenge from rookie Brandon Weeden for his starting job.

“I’m a competitor and I’m working harder than ever,” he told The Plain Dealer in an email. They were his first public remarks since Weeden was drafted No. 22 overall to become the Browns’ starter.

McCoy declined further comment, choosing to focus on the off-season program and the challenge he’ll get from Weeden. McCoy might be available next week when the team open its organized activities to the media for one of the three days.

On Monday, Weeden joined McCoy and Seneca Wallace in Phase II of the off-season program, which includes about an hour of work on the field each day, meetings and conditioning.

“I’ve already been bouncing ideas off of them,” Weeden told NFL Network’s Total Access Wednesday night. “I met both of them really for the first time on Monday and it’s been great ever since.”

As for his approach to the quarterback situation, Weeden said, ‘hopefully I get to play sooner rather than later, but I’m going out and compete. That’s what I’ve done since day one. Colt’s a great player and Seneca’s a great player.”

The Browns have consistently said that Weeden will have to compete for the starting job with McCoy and Wallace, but they’re aiming for Weeden to be their starter this season.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur told reporters after a Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon on Monday that Weeden is “headed in the right direction” for the starting job, but that he believes McCoy can still win in the NFL.

“Colt McCoy is a gritty guy,” Shurmur told the audience. “I think Colt McCoy is a fine football player and can play quarterback in this league. They’re both guys (Weeden and McCoy) that I want on this team and I want to see them compete. The best one will play when we play Philadelphia in September.”

Shurmur said it’s possible that Wallace will stick around, too.

“I think there’s a case to be made that Seneca, Colt and Brandon are all (here) together,” Shurmur said. “We’ll see. I think that’s yet to be determined. We’re going to watch them all compete and interact, and we’ll see what happens.”

McCoy went 4-9 last season after the Browns ‘ top three running backs were injured for all or most of the season, and starting receiver Mohamed Massaquoi was slowed by a broken foot and concussion. Right tackle Tony Pashos also played injured all season.

The Browns repeatedly said after the 2011 season that they expect McCoy to look better in his second year in the West Coast offense, especially now that he’s got an offseason to learn it from the coaches.

Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden just became one of our favorite players in the game. The 23-year-old NFLer made one high school senior’s prom truly one of the most special nights of her life by being her date for the dance, and all she did was ask—on Twitter.

“[The tweet] just said, ‘Hey Joe, would you consider going to my senior prom with me because my date backed out and didn’t go,’ ” Independence High School student Joyce Grendel told Fox 8.

Within a few hours, she got the shock of her life—Joe responded with a “yes.”

The 18-year-old was understandably nervous as she got ready for her big date Saturday night, and Joe did not disappoint, picking her up from her home not in a customary limo, but in a white Lamborghini. And though he was the man everyone was looking for that night, Joe said it was a big night for him too because he never made it to his senior prom since he graduated early.

“I am nervous, too,” he told Fox. “We were taking pictures with me and her family. I feel this is very legit, like I was getting ready, ‘Does this look cool?’ when I’m getting ready. I feel like I’m very legit. This is my prom, too.”

Though it seems like a far stretch that a pro athlete would take a random girl to prom, Joe and Joyce have a little history, at least as far as fandom goes. Prom actually wasn’t the first time Joyce and her friend, Lacey, who accompanied them to the dance with her own date, met Joe.

“I knew her because she tweets me a lot, and she’s been a really good Haden Nation supporter. All my autographs, all my signings, she always shows up, and Lacey,” he said.

Even Joyce’s dad felt like his daughter couldn’t have had a better date for the night.

“We met him last year. As a matter of fact, the kids went bowling with him downtown. You couldn’t find a nicer guy. I talked to him a little bit there. He’s not different than any of us; he’s just a quality guy.”

How sweet! Check out the video of the teen’s special night here.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Three rookies, three views of how the Browns might evolve:

Johnny “Lam” Jones lined up against Hanford Dixon years ago, when Dixon was trying to make the Browns’ roster as a rookie cornerback and Jones had just left scorch marks on the grassy fields of his native Texas.

A New York Jets wide receiver, Jones was from Lampasas, near Austin, hence the “Lam” nickname. But as a gold medalist in the 400-meter relay in 1976, he could take it on the lam, too.

“The thing was, he got on you so fast,” Dixon said.

Dixon gave Jones a big cushion in his coverage. Then he turned to fellow Brown Greg Pruitt, who was on the sideline, sitting on his helmet. “Can you tell when he’s going to go deep?” Dixon asked.

“I’d say, ‘Anytime he wants to,’ ” Pruitt said.

Everyone digs the long ball. Travis Benjamin, the Browns’ fourth-round draft pick as well as the first receiver selected by the team, will make everyone take a look at his deep-threat capability. Benjamin is 5-10, 175, and he was the second-fastest player at the NFL Combine.

Compared with Benjamin, Lam Jones was an inch taller, 5 pounds heavier, even faster and more highly regarded as the second pick overall in the 1980 draft. But even though Jones had played football at Texas, his ability to instill fear with his feet was not accompanied by what he wrought with his hands.

He had bad ones. He scored only 13 receiving touchdowns in four years and never had a gain longer than 55 yards.

Benjamin really didn’t have big playmaking stats at Miami — 13 touchdown passes in four years, one punt return for a score. The latter came at the Horseshoe against Ohio State in 2010. Part of the blame goes to his inconsistent quarterback, Jacory Harris.

Saturday, Benjamin took part in the “post” drill, devised by special offensive assistant Nolan Cromwell. Standing behind a heavy post that extended well above his head, Benjamin, jiggling his arms up and down before every throw — like a tennis player bouncing on the balls of his feet before attacking a serve — caught every ball thrown from 10 yards away, some fired directly at the post, others to either side. He had no drops. The drill emphasized quick reactions and peripheral vision, although some players took a quick peek around the post as the ball neared their extended hands.

In the NFL, of course, he will be covered by livelier defenders than a metal post.

“Benjamin’s biggest challenge will be using his footwork to beat bump-and-run coverage,” said coach Pat Shurmur. “They can’t give him a big cushion. He’ll be open all day by running short. And we’ll move him around [in motion and in the slot as well as being split wide].”

If a defender can’t back off Benjamin in coverage, he will try to jam him, keeping him from getting off the line of scrimmage quickly, disrupting the pattern. “It’s hard to jam a guy that quick,” Dixon said.

A man never forgets getting Lam-basted.

For being just 5-9,

Richardson plays big

Running back Trent Richardson, the first prize of the Browns’ draft, is a little taller than 5-9, shorter than Benjamin, who is a Smurf in today’s game. (Benjamin, by the way, never heard of the “Smurfs,” a term for the small Redskins receivers of the 1980s.)

Richardson, however, is not slight, just short.

“Don’t let the 5-91/2 fool you, he is almost 230 pounds, and that is a lot of muscle packed into that body,” Shurmur said. “By the nature of his build, he is sometimes hard to get your arms around and tackle. That natural leverage that he has also gives him great balance and body control.”

In one agility drill, players ran over blocking pads laid on the ground, their knees high. Then they sidestepped them, first to the right, then left, then right again. Coaches had to stress not touching the pads to former Toledo back Adonis Thomas, and they told Richardson’s 6-2, 235-pound fullback at Alabama, Brad Smelley, that his feet were too high as he cleared the barriers. Too much time spent in the air allows tacklers to close in. Richardson, however, took a couple of practice steps, then skimmed over the pads and zigzagged to the finish with ease.

His feet were so quick that he recalled former Browns back Eric Metcalf, all 5-9 and 188 pounds of him, hopscotching through the Bengals near the goal line on a magical touchdown run on the banks of the Ohio River in 1989.

“Short backs can hide behind their linemen. When I was coaching, I never saw Barry Sanders [5-8, 203] until he popped through the hole,” said Browns President Mike Holmgren.

Weeden displays

solid mechanics

Any fears that presumptive starting quarterback Brandon Weeden, a former minor-league pitcher, might get his curveball delivery mixed up with his swing-pass release seem unfounded. His mechanics are his strength.

“Did you see the out [pattern] Benjamin caught from Weeden?” asked Shurmur after a Saturday drill. “That was perfect.”

The ball seems to jump out of Weeden’s hand, even with his smooth release. He is accurate on slants and puts pace on the ball on deep outs. “A guy that can throw the ball with a smooth motion, the ball presents itself to the receivers well. I think that helps them be more efficient catching it,” Shurmur said.

Weeden recalled what Dallas’ Michael Irvin once said of the passes of strong-armed quarterback Troy Aikman: “The ball just says, ‘Catch me.’ ”

Once, Weeden whipped a slant squarely into the arms of Florida State free agent Bert Reed, hitting him in stride as he made his inside break. It is the same mastery of trajectory that Weeden showed on ESPN’s “Sports Science” show, when his passes were shattering clay pigeons.

It’s silly to make big judgments in noncontact drills. Still, this was a eureka moment. So this is what the West Coast offense is supposed to look like! It so seldom has been that way here.

The jokes about the Cleveland Browns finding ways to lose in May would be a bit funny if they weren’t so accurate.

The Browns confirmed the team’s worst fears on Friday when they announced that defensive tackle Phil Taylor had suffered a torn left pectoral muscle. The injury occurred on Thursday while Taylor was training at the team’s facility. Cleveland head coach Pat Shurmur called it a “one of those things” type of injury, and he also refused to say if Taylor would miss the entire 2012 NFL regular season.

Cleveland fans have to be feeling a bit of déjà vu at the moment. Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson missed nearly two full years of football due to similar injuries not that long ago. For what it’s worth, Jackson came back in a big way following those setbacks, playing better than ever during the 2011 campaign. The Browns rewarded Jackson with a nice new deal this past February.

There’s no denying that this is a significant blow to a Browns defense that played rather well throughout the 2011 season despite the team managing to win only a fourth of their games. Taylor was a key man during his rookie season, finishing the year seventh on the team in total tackles. He also had four sacks last season, good for third on the team behind Ahtyba Rubin (5 sacks) and Jabaal Sheard (8.5 sacks).

It seems that the best case scenario regarding Taylor would be a December return, one that would land him back on the field for Cleveland’s final four games of the regular season. According to all early 2012 NFL regular season prediction pieces that I’ve thus far read, the Browns will likely be playing for pride and not much else by that time. If that is the case, rushing Taylor back before next spring would be a foolish move for all involved.

I had one immediate thought upon hearing this news: I sure hope the Browns are right regarding John Hughes. Cleveland surprised football experts by selecting Hughes, a defensive tackle picked by many to go undrafted last April, in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Hughes is known mostly for his ability to stop the run. With Friday’s announcement, Hughes became more than just a “depth player.” Browns fans will be hoping Hughes will be ready to contribute in a big way on day 1 of the 2012 season.

 The duo of Sheard and Taylor was one of the best young defensive 1-2 punches in the league during 2011. You can be sure the Pittsburgh Steelers had those two in mind when the team used the 2012 NFL Draft to help rebuild a rather shoddy offensive line. Pittsburgh and other AFC North foes have to be breathing a collective sigh of relief knowing that Taylor will miss at least some of the 2012 season. Meanwhile, Browns fans are yet again left asking;

 why us?

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns open a rookie minicamp on Friday. Coach Pat Shurmur looked ahead to the minicamp in a conference call with the media on Thursday.

The Browns expect 37 players to participate, including all 11 of their draft picks and 15 undrafted free agents.

It’s common knowledge that every year, dozens of players — for one reason or another and often for no failing of their own — slip through the cracks and go undrafted, even though they were considered just as draft-worthy as many of the players picked.

On the other hand, some selected players could have just as easily never had their names called from the draft stage.

Here, we ask you to consider the Browns’ draft picks from rounds 5 through 7 and a selected group of undrafted free agents. The free agents include three players from Ohio college football programs, three wide receivers and the FCS national Defensive Player of the Year.

Profiles for most of the Browns draft picks can be found here, and brief playing bios of the undrafted free agents can be found here.

(5th, for instance, indicates 5th-round draft pick; FA indicates undrafted free agent)

Which Browns’ low draft pick or undrafted free agent has the most interesting potential?

BEREA, Ohio Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur's conference call with the media Shurmur: “The players are reporting. The rookies are getting their physicals, getting checked in and then we will have an orientation meeting tonight

BEREA, Ohio

Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur’s conference call with the media

Shurmur: “The players are reporting. The rookies are getting their physicals, getting checked in and then we will have an orientation meeting tonight. Tomorrow, we will have two meetings and two practices. It will be the same thing on Saturday. We will have one meeting and one practice on Sunday. We will try to get them out of the building on Sunday by noon. This rookie minicamp will obviously incorporate a couple other players that are not rookies but by the way their contracts were structured they are allowed to compete. Assuming everything goes as planned with the physicals here, we will have 37 guys out there.”

On whether there will be more than one quarterback in camp:

Shurmur: “Yes, there will be two guys there. (Brandon) Weeden and there’s another guy that’s going to be in here – Darron Thomas.”

On whether Darron Thomas was undrafted:

Shurmur: “Yes.”

On what he hopes to accomplish this weekend:

Shurmur: “This is a big weekend for the rookies because they are going to learn a lot about procedure and process and how we do things. Of course the tempo won’t be the same because the lines are going to be very short, some positions may only have one or two guys. There will be a lot of individual time, a lot of technique work, not near as much team work as you would normally get when you have one, two or three groups. It’s just a way to orient the rookies, get them up to speed with how we do business and they will get a great deal of individual time.”

On this being his first camp and how much he is looking forward to it:

Shurmur: “I am looking forward to it. Every little piece of the offseason has been fun so far because we were able to plan it. Obviously, the free acquisition phase with the free agency, the draft preparation, the draft itself, the beginning of the offseason program. The attendance in our offseason program is outstanding. I think the guys are getting good work. Now, this phase where we can actually go out in practice-type settings, this is fun for coaches because this is why we do this job because we can go out there and work on the field with the players.”

On if he is looking forward to seeing Weeden taking snaps under center:

Shurmur: “Yeah, I am looking forward to him executing as a quarterback whether we are under center or in the shotgun, all of which happens in the NFL. I am looking forward to watching him operate.”

About whether there is any trepidation about finally seeing Weeden live as opposed to film and workouts:

Shurmur: “Nope, not at all. I know why we drafted him and I think we were able to accurately evaluate his skills. It’s just a matter of him doing it. No, I am looking forward to it actually.”

About whether he has told Weeden that he has to win the job and that it will not be handed to him:

Shurmur: “Yeah, I think that is the speech I give all of the rookies and it will be part of what I say tonight as well. Again, I know what we are all trying to get at with this stuff, but we drafted these players for a reason. We drafted them with the idea that they could come in and start or until they start, could be effective role players. But, they have to come here and do it. By doing it, that’s when we talk about competing. That’s where they are at and they understand that. We are catching these guys coming out of college and they have been competing as athletes since they were very young boys, for most of them. They understand that and of course we remind them of it. I’ve reminded all of them of it. They don’t expect anything will be given to them because that was the case when they went to college as well. I am sure they all will look at this as this is just another step in their football careers. We don’t give anybody anything. They have got to earn it in our eyes.”

About splitting things up in a competition:

Shurmur: “They come out and compete. There is competition that is going on on the practice field that is obvious to all. There is a lot going on there that is not so obvious. They are out there trying to do their very best and then we will decide who the starter is of course. I will decide who the starters are going to be when we play against Philadelphia. It’s going to be a fun thing to talk about. I can feel it already.”

On what he is hoping to see this weekend:

Shurmur: “What I am looking for, and again it is going to be very important for us to manage the tempo, I am looking forward to seeing them compete. I am looking forward to them being able to function in a meeting room, learn what we want to do and then go out and do it on the field. Then be able to come in after we do it, watch it on tape and make the corrections we need to make and go out there and repeat the process. That is what I am looking for. I am looking to see guys compete. I am looking to see guys that will show us why we drafted them, that they have the ability to learn and then have the ability to then go out and do it on the field.”

On whether any of the players can show that they will be an upgrade at wide receiver:

Shurmur: “I feel like we will be upgraded there because the players that are here will be improved and then I want to see Travis Benjamin obviously. I want to see how he functions and then we have some undrafted guys that are in. One other guy I gained an appreciation for was Josh Cooper because I watched him catch a lot of Brandon’s (Weeden) balls. I am looking forward to seeing him compete. When you draft guys you are pretty certain that they are going to be able to make the transition to this league and this will be the first time where they get a chance to prove it.”

About what he saw in Josh Cooper and what his style is like:

Shurmur: “I saw him primarily as a slot receiver. It’s easy to try to lump him in with similar-type guy like Danny Amendola who we had in St. Louis so I was familiar with him. These guys get a lot of catches and typically they are in the slot working one-on-one. That’s kind of what you saw him do. He obviously ran other routes and has more of a packet than just running option routes out of the slot, but that is kind of what you see.”

About if Spender Lanning is a kickoff specialist:

Shurmur: “He has a little bit of that in his package, but he is basically a punter.”

On whether Lanning will get an opportunity to fill a role like that:

Shurmur: “We are going to see what he can do. We feel like he is a developing player so we have to see it with our eyes.”

About if all of the players are healthy:

Shurmur: “I think so. They are all getting their physicals right now. I don’t know of anybody that is not going to be able to be out there and complete.”

About whether Trent Richardson is good to go:

Shurmur: “Yeah, he will be out there.”

On if any rules have changed the way they operated rookie minicamps in the past:

Shurmur: “This is typical of most rookie camps prior to this year. In terms of hours and time on the field, it is very typical to years previous. I know nine teams did their rookie camp last weekend, and I am sure they did it for obvious reasons, but for us the majority of these guys who don’t have any college graduation requirements will be able to be here on Monday. It made sense for us to do it this weekend and then them be able to stay here and compete starting Monday.”

On Scott Fujita’s suspension and how important it is to get the rookie linebackers up to speed:

Shurmur: “What Scott is going through is league business. As far as we know right now, he is going to be out for three games. We will plan around that and see what happens. We feel good about the linebackers we drafted. I will be able to talk about them more after this weekend.”

About if you can get a feel for how well guys pick things up after these first five practices:

Shurmur: “We have an idea of how well they learn when we drafted them, whether if some guys may need a little more this or a little bit more of that. Some guys are a bit more visual and they need to do it on the field. Some guys can handle it from the classroom. They are all different in the way they learn. That is why when I say they are going to learn the process and procedure, that will help us understand more where we can help them best. We have an idea with each player how they learn as we go into this, but this will be the first time we are really teaching them a pretty solid installation of our stuff, see how they handle it and then go from there as how we can help them learn better.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

The 2012 Cleveland Browns’ schedule gives the team a chance to play back into relevancy in the AFC North. With the acquisitions of running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden and offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz in the 2012 NFL Draft, the franchise might have taken a step towards getting back on track.

The schedule begins on Sunday, Sept 9, when the Browns host the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a tough way to start the season, but at least the home crowd will get an early look at the youngsters. Week 2 brings a road-trip to play the Cincinnati Bengals before the team comes home for a Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Browns didn’t receive any Monday night games in the 2012 NFL schedule, but the team does have a Thursday date with the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 27.

Just what the Cleveland Browns needed; yet another quarterback controversy.

Regardless of your feelings regarding the Browns selecting quarterback Brandon Weeden in the 2012 NFL Draft, what’s done is done. Barring an injury setback or a complete meltdown that’s unforeseen as of the typing of this sentence, Weeden will be on Cleveland’s roster come September. Team president Mike Holmgren stated while appearing on the The Bull and Fox Show on 92.3 The Fan on Tuesday that the current plan is to have Weeden “compete” for the starting job along with 2011 starter Colt McCoy. Holmgren even stated that he still “loved” McCoy despite picking a QB who is thought, by most analysts, to be Cleveland’s unnamed starter heading into summer.

When you really love something, sometimes the best thing you can do is to let that thing go.

I like McCoy more than do a lot of analysts and Cleveland sports fans. I believe that, unintentionally or not, McCoy was setup to fail by a Browns organization that, for no good reason, held onto a (nut-job) running back for one year too long, an organization that also completely failed to surround the team’s quarterback with adequate weapons. Save your breath and your time trying to convince me that McCoy doesn’t have the arm or the talent to play at the professional level. Outside of the most elite QBs in the game, I find it impossible to believe that any signal-caller would have led the 2011 Browns to a winning season.

Regardless of what Holmgren or head coach Pat Shurmur say about the matter, things changed last December when McCoy suffered what was a career-altering and team-altering concussion. The Browns were, up until that point, prepared to go through the inevitable growing pains that come from having a young starting QB. Despite those in the team front office constantly voicing their approval of McCoy following the controversial concussion and during the current offseason, the Browns have made it clear that they are going in a different direction. Don’t take my word for it. Just ask Mr. Weeden.

There’s no point in anybody, myself included, going out of their way to defend McCoy. As I stated at the beginning of this piece, what’s done is done. Browns fans know all-too-well about the “if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks” saying. The Cleveland front office made a decision on the first day of the 2012 NFL Draft. Keeping Colt McCoy around for a faux competition doesn’t do anybody any good. As others have stated, you don’t draft a 28-year old quarterback in the first round to have him hold a clipboard and wear a headset. Once the McCoy trade rumors surfaced during the draft, his time as Cleveland’s starting QB was up. Let’s all stop kidding ourselves and just move on.

The Browns acquiring a few more offensive weapons also wouldn’t hurt.

CLEVELAND — Browns President Mike Holmgren elaborated today on ESPN’s Mike and Mike, with the show airing live from Progressive Field, about the organization’s decision to make rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden compete with Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the starting quarterback job.

”It’s going to be interesting to say the least,” he said. “They’re all at the facility right now (Weeden won’t be in town until Thursday and rookie camp starts Friday) in the offseason program working like crazy, they’re all good guys and they understand the competitive situation they’re in. Do they have to like it? I’m not asking them to like it necessarily, but they’ve handled it very, very well like I thought they would.

”We’ll see and I told Weeden, I’ve never had a player who we were going to draft, as a coach or in my current role, sit in my office prior to the draft and say ‘if we pick you, you’re the starter. I’ve never said that. I don’t think it’s the right thing to say, because if they’re not the starter, then they feel you’ve lied to them and been dishonest, so I’m not going to do that.

”But they’re going to compete. Because of his age, you kind of think ‘okay, (Weeden) can’t sit and watch for two or three years, that doesn’t make any sense. But he’s got to prove it. He has to prove it like every other player we have and that’s how we’re approaching it. And then what happens down the road on a trade or who we go to camp with, that will play out, I think. We’re not forcing that at all.”

He also further his explained his thinking about taking Weeden at No. 22 after Baylor’s Kendall Wright went off the board at No. 20.

”We were trying to have our cake and eat it too at the start of it. We wanted everything,” he said. “And to get everything, we thought we could get a wide receiver with the 22nd pick. Then, when we decided we wanted Weeden, what does this mean? We had the pick No. 37. You could make a case that none of those teams between 22 and 37 really needed a quarterback his age that would have to come in and probably play right away.

”What you can’t ever factor in is someone hopping in there, so that was a concern. But it was answered for us because Wright went (at 20). Once the receiver was taken, then I said, ‘look if we’re committed — and we were thinking about even moving up from 37, let’s take him now.’ Take him now, it’s done, he’s the quarterback, and then we don’t have to worry about it and that’s what happened.”

He also addressed the new league guidelines on dealing with gameday concussions.

”We lived through a much-publicized play with Colt McCoy last year,” he said. “The new rules that are being implemented will help, some people watching, some cameras on the field to alert the doctors so they have more information, and as long as we keep talking about it, we can help in that area, because no one wants to put a guy out there at risk.”

As for the league being too overprotective about it, he said, “I think there’s a chance because so much has been mentioned about it. But you err on the side of caution I suppose and now the rule (is), if they even think if he got his bell rung just a little bit, they take him off the field and take him inside. Right away you lose the player for awhile. While inside, they’re going to give a series of tests which takes some time, and if you can’t pass those tests, he doesn’t come back out.”

He also said he spoke to owners and coaches at the league meetings about the decision-makers going back to their teams and making certain that bounties and pay-for-performance programs were not occurring.
